The Mission Stations. The Centenary Way of Lithuanian Missionaries. Collection by Antanas Saulaitis SJ: catalogue. Compiled by Alina Pavasarytė. Vilnius: Bažnytinio paveldo muziejus, 2018, 276 p.
The exhibition “The Mission Stations. The Centenary Way of Lithuanian Missionaries” in the Church Heritage Museum for the first time presents to society the collection “The Mission Station”assembled by the missionary priest Antanas Saulaitis SJ, his friends and companions. Accumulated for half a century, the collection consists of more than 2,500 exhibits from various cultures – liturgical implements, household artefacts, objects of personal use, books, printed material, letters, souvenirs, sound and video recordings, and other material – testifying to the century-long activity of Lithuanian missionaries all around the world.
The catalogue presents exhibits that are shown in the exhibition and belong to the collection “The Mission Station”. Their historical, cultural meaning and circumstances that made the exhibits a part of the collection are presented. The second part of the book is dedicated to biographies of Lithuanian missionaries and mission volunteers. 35 stories tell about creativity, sense of humor, surprising moments and extraordinary experiences of the people who sacrificed their well-known and comfortable everyday life for humanitarian aid and evangelization.
The catalogue is published in Lithuanian with a summary in English.
