The Vilnius Cathedral bell tower has been welcoming visitors for a decade now. In celebration of this milestone, we proudly presented the installations Vėjalaikis by Žilvinas Kempinas, crafted exclusively for this historic space. It marked the first encounter between contemporary art and the ancient tower.
Vėjalaikis intertwines concepts of height, verticality, light, time, materiality and transience. Harnessing the city’s winds, it uses them to animate magnetic bands, creating a whisper unheard within these walls before. The sleek black strips accentuate the timeless architecture; indeed, the bell tower‘s lower walls trace back to the 13th century. The kinetic sculpture, comprising 700 (+1) vertical magnetic strips reminiscent of tree rings, symbolizes the years of Vilnius‘s existence, fused into a physical yet ephemeral monument.
